DANIEL Scott has received the Lions Club Regional Youth of the Year Award after a dazzling display of public speaking on Saturday afternoon.

The Dalby State High School student beat out stiff competition that included students from Chinchilla and Roma, as well as schoolmate Clara Rudd.

The modest school leader didn't think he stood a chance of winning though, admitting the calibre of his opponents had him concerned.

"I didn't think I was a chance because the other speeches were so good, I'm very surprised,” Daniel said.

"I need to practice my speech a lot more; I didn't practice much this week because I didn't expect to go through (laughs).”

Pedigree experts would have liked the look of Daniel form the beginning though, with his older siblings Jonathon, Michael, Chris and Kirsten all having previously taken out Lions Awards.

In his prepared five minute speech, Daniel spoke about his time volunteering in poverty ravaged countries South Africa and Myanmar, and noted the widening gap between Australia's wealthiest and poorest had him concerned.

"When I spent time overseas I came back and saw similarities beginning here; I'm passionate about Australia and don't want the same thing to happen.”

Daniel now moves onto the district final to be held in Toowoomba this weekend.
