'Over it': New poll reveals what Australians really think about January 26 debate

The Western Downs will come alive this Australia Day with events being held from Dalby to Wandoan.

Whether you enjoy some fun in the sun or a delicious cooked breakfast, there’s something for everyone this Australia Day.

In a press release Western Downs Regional Council mayor Andrew Smith said Australia Day was a time to celebrate the Australian spirit.

“Australia Day provides an opportunity for us all to come together and demonstrate the pride we have in our communities and celebrate our incredible region and country,” he said.

“We like to say ‘it’s the people that make it’ on the Western Downs and we are renowned for our mateship, our resilience and our active, vibrant communities’.

“Through our Australia Day events we are able to make great memories with friends and family and celebrate achievements of incredible people in our communities through the presentation of our annual Australia Day Awards.”

Mr Smith said there would be six Australia Day events held across the region to ensure everyone got the opportunity to get involved.

“The pinnacle of our Australia Day events is always the presentation of our Australia Day Awards, which applaud the selflessness of our region’s volunteers and celebrate the remarkable achievements of our local community groups, creatives and athletes,” he said in the press release.

“Through our Australia Day Awards we acknowledge and commend the outstanding individuals who serve as the heart and backbone of our local communities.”

Below is a full list of the events planned:

CHINCHILLA 

Hosted at the Chinchilla Museum an Australia Day breakfast will take place from 7.30am Sunday, followed by an Awards Ceremony 8.30am.

Later that morning from 11am- 2pm a family fun day will take place at the Chinchilla Aquatic Centre.

From 3pm the Club Hotel Chinchilla will host their annual pig races alongside Vegemite painting and colouring-in, egg and spoon races, thong throwing competitions, laser tag and slushies and snow cones to stay cool.

DALBY

Hosted at Mary’s Place an Australia Day Breakfast will take place from 7.30am Sunday followed by an awards ceremony 8.30am.

Later that morning from 11am- 2pm a family fun day will take place at the Dalby Aquatic Centre.

The Criterion Hotel will be hosting an epic two-day beer pong tournament on Saturday and Sunday to celebrate Australia Day with the winning team taking home a cash prize of $1000.

JANDOWAE

Hosted at the Athlone Cottage Jandowae an Australia Day breakfast will take place from 7.30am Sunday followed by an awards ceremony 8.30am.

The Jandowae Hotel Motel will be hosting Australia Day celebrations with live music from 2pm.

MILES

Hosted at the Leichhardt Centre an Australia Day breakfast will take place from 7.30am Sunday followed by an awards ceremony 8.30am.

Later that morning from 11am- 2pm a family fun day will take place at the Miles Aquatic Centre.

The Q Hotel Miles will be hosting an Australia Day roast lamb lunch with prizes and surprises. Kids karaoke will be held after lunch before adults karaoke at night.

TARA

Hosted at the Tara Soldiers Memorial Hall an Australia Day breakfast will take place from 7.30am Sunday followed by an awards ceremony 8.30am.

Later that morning from 11am- 2pm a family fun day will take place at the Tara Aquatic Centre.

Tara residents are also encouraged to pull out their joggers and participate in a colour fun run at the Tara Lagoon.

On Saturday the Tara Commercial Hotel will be hosting a Hottest 100 listening day party from 12 pm and an Australia Day party the following day with live music from 2 pm.

WANDOAN

Hosted at the Hosted at the Athlone Cottage Jandowae an Australia Day breakfast will take place from 7.30am Sunday followed by an awards ceremony 8.30am.

The Juandah Hotel Motel are hosting Australia Day celebrations with a live band and a sausage sizzle.
