Western Downs residents will be eligible for up to $2000 in rainwater tank installation rebates through a council initiative aimed at improving the region's water security.
Served on a first come, first served basis for new tanks only, the rebate amounts will vary from $500 to $2000 depending on the size of tank and whether it is on Western Downs Regional Council’s potable or non-potable water networks.
This scheme will also support residents in non-potable areas, with them being eligible for the $2000 rebate when installing tanks with a 40,000-litre capacity or more.
In a press release council spokesman for utilities, councillor Sam Condon, said the incentive would help to alleviate pressures on water storage in the community.
“Council is committed to sustainable planning for the future, and supporting its residents in the installation of rainwater tanks on their properties represents a straightforward and effective approach to enhancing resilience throughout the Western Downs,“ Mr Condon said in a statement.
“Recognising that long-term water availability is a concern for many areas, including our own, we have incorporated a popular subsidy scheme into the $12.6m budget to enhance the region’s long-term water security. This investment will also facilitate region-wide upgrades and improvements to water infrastructure.
“As of June 2024, we have finalised 147 tank rebates, resulting in a significant reduction in our reliance on the town water supply. This initiative has enhanced the local water storage capacity throughout the region.
“Additionally, the program supports local employment by generating business for the region’s tank manufacturers and installers, contributing positively to the economy.
“Council is proud to be delivering this initiative once again to continue these efforts, and I would strongly encourage our residents to get on board and take advantage of what this has to offer.”
Council will attend the property to ensure the tank is fully installed and the money will be reimbursed when proof of purchase is provided.
