Seven community groups across the Jandowae region will share in grants totalling $83,000 in the latest round of the Wambo Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund.
Wambo Wind Farm is a renewable energy generation project located near Jandowae consisting of 83 wind turbines which add more than 500 megawatts of clean energy to Queensland’s energy system.
Each year Cubico Sustainable Investments and Stanwell Corporation, the co-owners of Wambo Wind Farm, provide up to $200,000 in funding to support the communities in which they operate to establish long-term benefits for surrounding towns including Jandowae and Bell.
The fund aims to improve the lives of those who live and work near Wambo Wind Farm and make the region more connected, sustainable, resilient and healthy.
This year’s grant recipients include Jandowae & District Progress and Heritage Association who will use the money to weatherproof the Jandowae Heritage Precinct’s former school building and shearer’s quarters, the Bell Theatre Group who will purchase food preparation equipment and the Jandowae Squash Club who will replace their air conditioners.
Other recipients of the grants included the Jandowae & District Tennis Association, and club president Karel Brownhall said the grants were welcomed.
“We applied to purchase table tennis tables for our clubhouse and also airconditioning for our clubhouse,” she said.
“The aircon will help for if people want to use the clubhouse for meetings and group gatherings and when we start up our table tennis comp it will allow us to use it year round.
“We are trying to expand the club’s purpose a bit more and the tennis side of it has become really popular over the past five years because of the new courts.
“It was very exciting to receive the grants, we had applied for the grant previously a few years ago and didn’t get it, but it is all coming together because we have solar panel on the way so it is great timing to get airconditioning in the club house.
“Our clubhouse gets very hot in summer so this will make it more comfortable.”
Project director Carl Allcorn said the grant program was making a positive difference within the community and congratulated the latest round of recipients.
“Being a good neighbour is an important part of how Wambo Wind Farm operates. It was fantastic to receive so many applications for funding in this round – I would like to thank all the applicants and congratulate the successful recipients,” he said.
“We are extremely proud to be part of this community and look forward to contributing to the local community for many more years to come.”
