Council offers traineeships for workers with a disability

The Western Downs Regional council has announced two new traineeships specific for workers with a disability

THE Western Downs Regional Council is giving new opportunities to people with disabilities as part of the Early Career Program.

Local employment agencies will be partnering with the council to deliver work opportunities to people with physical and intellectual disabilities in the new year.

The council will be offering two traineeships to locals with a disability. These traineeships will provide paid full-time employment during their traineeship, online and face-to-face training, and access to experienced supervisors who will mentor and assist the trainees.

Councillor Ian Rasmussen, spokesman for Finance and Corporate services, is excited for the program to begin and for locals to apply.

"We want to ensure that our region is the perfect place for everyone to live, work and play so this is a fantastic way to continue to do that,” MrRasmussen said in a statement.

"Employing local people produces real results for their own communities which is exactly what we want to see.”

Manager at Waminda Dalby, Tania Marshall, believes these opportunities will be incredibly beneficial to those who participate.

"We thank council for giving the people at Waminda equal opportunities to contribute to the community and we're always supportive of any initiatives that assist people with a disability to gain meaningful employment,” Marshall said in a statement.

The traineeships will begin in 2019.
