SEVENTY years ago, the sounds of Cecil Ryan's trumpet were a staple at dances in Dalby.

Music was a family affair for the Ryan descendants.

They formed The Ryans Dance Band and performed at more than 4000 dances from St George to Toowoomba. In a time before the rock 'n' roll era, The Ryans Dance Band kept patrons moving on the dance floor for more than 45 years.

Cec's son Will Ryan said his dad continued to share his love for music throughout his life, forming another band called Ryans Rhythm Ramblers after the war.

"He was always away with the band... they loved entertaining people,” Mr Ryan said.

Born in Dalby, Cec was an "integral” part of the community. He was retailer on Cunningham St and raised his family in the area.

Because of his entrenched history in the area, when Cec died his children wanted to return the trumpet to the place where his love of music started.

"My siblings and I decided we would like to acknowledge our father and forefathers for the entertainment they provided in Dalby and in surrounding districts for over 50 years,” Mr Ryan said.

"What better way than to take his trumpet back to Dalby ... where it can perhaps rekindle memories for those who may have attended dances in that era.”

Mr Ryan and his sisters Anne, Rayleen and Patricia travelled from across the country last week to donate their father's trumpet to the Pioneer Park Museum.

It is now on display.
