TWO players from Dalby Ladies Bowls are headed to the national level.

Val Dun and Wendy Usher make up half of a four person side headed to Merimbula, NSW, next week after winning the state title earlier this year at the Sunshine Coast.

Team skip Wendy Usher said they were pretty excited to be playing in the fours at the Australian championships.

The ladies described their winning team as a 'throw together'.

"I was asked to come in as a lead when another lady had to be hospitalised so I had never met two of the other team when we won the title,” Val said.

Personal skill and a good mix of the right people made for the winning team.

"We gelled well together and we played well together,” Wendy said.

"We were the underdogs, I've got to say, at the state,” Val said.

"Nobody thought four ladies with an average age of 60 would win a state title.”

The team described bowls as exciting, challenging and occasionally stressful; all reasons that made the game more enjoyable.

Val described Wendy as a very calm captain and skip and very good to play for.

Wendy said she always looked for the positives in her team mates.

"It helps to keep them in the game,” Wendy said.

The team of three armed bowlers and one unarmed is completed by Heather Hogan from Paradise Point Bowls Club and Cheryl Hutinson from Broadbeach Bowls Club.

The women are aiming to continue their win by adding a national title to their list of accomplishments.
