Local police officer Sgt Brett Hunter has been named as the regional Adopt-a-Cop for his work with students at Dalby South State School.

Sgt Hunters has been part of the adopt-a-cop program since October of 2011.

He chose to join the program after becoming involved with DSSS life with his sons who attended there.

Sgt. Hunter was nominated for the district adopt a cop award by the crime prevention coordinator in Dalby.

After winning the district award, Sgt Hunter's nomination was moved on to the regional round which he also won.

Sgt Hunter said he became interested in helping at DSSS when his sons attended.

"Through my connection with junior rugby league I became aware of kids that probably needed some help at school... so from that its developed,” Sgt Hunter said.

"I sat with students either in the class or in a room near the class and did one on one work with them.”

"Reading with them, helping with maths and their homework and assignments.”

"You could see the difference it made to some of them in the fact that they had someone that was one on one and took an interest in helping them.”

DSSS principal David Kucks said Sgt Hunter had been involved in the school as their Adopt-a-Cop, parent, P&C member and more for over 10 years.

"He's very generous with his time, at any time of day or night he's there to give you a hand,” Mr Kucks said.

"Whenever he's called upon he's happy to help.”

"I think the adopt a cop program is a great way of building relationships between QPS and kids and schools.”

"We encourage any of the police in Dalby to wander up, come to South at any time, during break times to say g'day and build a relationship with our kids and I think that's really good thing to break down barriers and make people understand that police are just like everyone else.”

"They've got a job to do, and they a really tough job and they contribute a great deal to our community.”
