Dalby Saleyards in top three for sales performance in Australia, cements position as key performer in livestock industry

The Dalby Regional Saleyards have cemented their place as one of the top three saleyards in the country after a record-breaking year.

In 2024, Dalby Regional Saleyards sold 193,763 head of cattle, moving a yearly record 7470 head of cattle on 27 November, with their figures placing the saleyards among the top three in Australia.

On average Dalby Saleyards sold 5097 head of cattle for the 2024-2025 financial year to date.

Western Downs Regional Council Business Strategy and Economic Development spokeswoman councillor Megan James said the Dalby Regional Saleyards supported the region’s economy, and highlighted the importance of the its agriculture industry.

“With 680 pens, Dalby Regional Saleyards has a significant advantage for both local producers and buyers, allowing us to manage large scale cattle sales efficiently and accommodate a diverse range of livestock,” she said in a press release.

“Hosting sale opportunities every Wednesday, this is the one of the largest same-day prime and store cattle sales in Australia.

“Western Downs is recognised as a leader in agritourism and the saleyard tours are a vital part of our story as a region.”

Ms James said the yards would be hosting weekly tours of the facility every Wednesday from April to October 2025.

“The facility is not just a leading auction site for the agricultural sector, but also a cornerstone for agritourism, offering an opportunity for visitors to experience Australia’s rural heritage first-hand,” she said.

“The Dalby Regional Saleyards hosted 50 saleyard tours, guided by local experts, offering a behind the scenes look at the daily operations of ones of Australia’s busiest saleyards.

“Saleyard tours attracted groups from all walks of life, including some that had travelled from England, New Zealand, as well as many interstate visitors.

“Our saleyard tours are one of the most unique agricultural tours in the world and with our custom-built pedestrian walkways and viewing platforms, these tours offer a rare insight to the Australian cattle industry.”
