The moments after a deadly high impact head-on collision between two cars along the Warrego Highway have been revealed by witnesses at the scene, who jumped from their own vehicles and valiantly performed CPR in a desperate attempt to save a Western Downs woman’s life.
Debris was strewn across the major thoroughfare and both lanes were shut down when a Subaru and a LandCruiser collided along the highway near Bowenville Moola Connection Road at 4.56pm, Friday July 9.
Queensland Police said the 24-year-old Tara woman driver of the Subaru was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The 39-year-old East Toowoomba woman driver and three children in the LandCruiser were transported to Toowoomba hospital with minor injuries.
Dalby fire captain Peter Mauch said the LandCruiser passengers were assessed by paramedics upon their arrival.
“We believe one vehicle has veered onto the wrong side of the road,” he said.
“We had crews conducting CPR for quite a while, and we had a LifeFlight doctor fly in to assist, but it was sadly too late.”
A Toowoomba man was travelling east along the highway behind one of the vehicle’s with his family when disaster struck.
“I saw the aftermath of it, because we were two cars back, so I hopped out to help” he said.
“A person in the car in front jumped out, along with another few people to assist,” he said.
“There were a few of us working on her, and then there happened to be an off duty ambo who came out this way to help.”
The man’s wife was a passenger in the car, and said she saw “cars spinning” after the vehicles collided.
NewsCorp understands bystanders desperately performed CPR for 30 minutes in an attempt to save the 24-year-old woman’s life until emergency services arrived.
The highway was shut both ways as police, paramedics, and fireys arrived.
Crews continued to render assistance to the driver, but the woman died at the scene.
A Queensland police spokeswoman said the Warrego Highway at Bowenville was closed in both directions, with a detour in place in Jondaryan.
