A POLICE officer charged over the death of his baby son has pleaded guilty to the 10-week-old boy’s manslaughter.
Senior Constable Colin David Randall, 39, pleaded guilty to the offence in the Brisbane Supreme Court this morning and was discharged on the original offence of murder.
He will be sentenced on Tuesday after being arrested in 2017 following an 18-month investigation into the baby’s death.
The crown will allege Senior Constable Randall was at home with his son in June, 2014, when he phoned Triple-0 and told the operator his baby had stopped breathing, and he began CPR.
An autopsy later found the child had serious head injuries, The Courier-Mail understands.
Justice Peter Davis remanded Randall in custody until Tuesday, when he will be sentenced for the offence.
Crown prosecutor Phil McCarthy said the sentence handed to child killer Heidi Strbak should be considered a comparable case.
“I’ll be moving very much towards the sentencing process in Strbak,” he told the court.
Strbak was last year jailed for a maximum nine years for the manslaughter of her four-year-old son Tyrell Cobb, but will be eligible for parole in October 2021, after serving a four-year non-parole period.
Strbak is appealing her sentence.
