TWO children have been found dead in a car near Brisbane, with a crime scene established as police work to piece together the circumstances behind the tragedy.
The two children, girls aged just one and two, were found unresponsive in the car on Logan Reserve Road at Waterford West about 1.30pm.
In a press conference this afternoon, Detective Inspector Mark White from the Logan Child Protection and Investigation said there was some evidence the girls were exposed to “extreme heat”, which was directing the police investigation.
He said paramedics attempted to revive the young children, but they were declared deceased shortly after.
Detective White said police were speaking with parents and said the “fast-paced” investigation was ongoing.
“We are speaking with the parents of those children, and it’s just a very very tragic incident that has occurred,” he said.
“We are in the process of conducting an investigation but also being mindful of the tragic circumstances in which we find ourselves here today.
“We’re at a very fast-paced stage of the investigation now ,we have a lot of moving parts. A lot of inquiries being conducted ... identifying who made phone calls to the QAS will form part of it, and exactly what the circumstances were surrounding that.”
He refused to reveal details about the children but said emergency service personnel were working in a horrific environment.
“It’s tragic and we are putting a lot of emphasis on supporting our people,” he said.
A crime scene has been established in the suburban street, with forensic officers, detectives and uniform police all involved in the investigation.
A neighbour walking the street said she knew the woman whose children were found dead.
“I’m very upset,” she said.
One neighbour - Melissa - spoke of confronting scenes as as emergency services removed the young bodies.
“I just imagine if it was my children, I’d be very sad,” she said.
“It’s really unfortunate.”
Another resident is hosting her grandson’s 15th birthday a few doors down.
“I feel sick,” she said.
Neighbours said the family had only moved in as recently as six months ago.
The home is expected to remain a crime scene for several days .
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed crews were called to a private home at 1.32pm following reports of a “medical incident”.
The spokeswoman would not comment on the condition of the children when paramedics arrived.
