DETECTIVES have made a major breakthrough in the murder of a Brisbane restaurateur and have arrested a man this morning.
Police arrested Za’id Abdus Samad this morning over the murder of his uncle Abdul Basith Mohammed, who owned, a Kuraby restaurant.
Mr Mohammed was repeatedly stabbed outside his house in St George St, in Kuraby in Brisbane’s south, when power was cut just after midnight on October 25 in 2017.
He died on the front lawn of his property.
The arrest follows a lengthy investigation by local detectives and the homicide squad.
Mr Mohammed was known by many as Abdul Basith.
Abdus Samad did not appear in the Brisbane Arrest Court on Wednesday morning and his matter was quickly adjourned.
Abdus Samad’s lawyer Brendan Beavon had the matter listed for committal on February 4.
He was remanded in custody.
The Courier-Mail previously revealed there were issues between Mr Basith and relatives after he took his brother’s stepdaughter as his bride, despite already being married.
Acting Superintendent Craig Morrow said no one has claimed the $250,000 reward on offer for information about Mr Basith’s death.
The reward remains on offer.
“We’re open to the possibility of other people being involved,” Sup Morrow said.
“This arrest today does not end this offer of reward. We would encourage any person who still has information to come forward.”
Sup Morrow would not comment on the alleged motive of Abdus Samad.
“The motive is something the investigative team will present through out the court process,” Sup Morrow said.
But he confirmed that police will allege there is a key piece of evidence that links Abdus Samad to the killing.
