THE lead detective investigating the disappearance of Mount Isa teen Kyle Coleman has pulled apart the version of events his friend James Coleman detailed in the days after their fateful hunting trip.

On the final day of a coronial inquest into the disappearance of Kyle Coleman, then 17, the story James Coleman (no relation) told before he committed suicide, unravelled, to be shown to be full of inconsistencies and lies.

Detective Senior Constable Megan Johnston was the final witness, saying all evidence pointed to Kyle Coleman never leaving Undilla Station on February 21, 2014.

FATHER: They found his watch, swag – and bullets

MARKING: Shotgun case key to teen mystery

She said James Coleman’s story began to fall apart after a trip to Undilla Station with police, saying the timeline he gave was “impossible”.

“I would say it was impossible, if you compare the time frame that it took for me to conduct the drive around up to Undilla and return with James … (it’s) completely impossible.”

Sen Const Johnston agreed with barrister Dennis Lynch when he said James’s version of events was riddled with lies, agreeing with a 10 point list.

“That’s right … it (the list) would suggest that (Kyle returning to Mount Isa with James) never happened.”

Toni-Lee Sabin, James Coleman’s girlfriend at the time of his death, said she didn’t hear James or Kyle come home on the Friday night and that it was unusual for the pair not to wake her.

“I woke up around 6.30, 7.30am and I was the only one home,” she said.

“I saw James around 8.20am on the Saturday morning (when she was picked up by her father and taken to work).”

Ms Sabin said she believed the version of events James told her and still does.

“From when it happened until he passed away it was the same story.

“I don’t believe James would walk up to someone and shoot someone.”

In their final submissions both Mr Lynch and counsel assisting the coroner Stephanie Williams agreed that Kyle never left Undilla Station, but disagreed on how he died.

Ms Williams said Kyle most likely died from a shooting accident, while Mr Lynch said he was “unlawfully” killed and was disposed of.

Coroner Jane Bentley is expected to deliver her findings in coming weeks.
