OVERNIGHT: Human remains discovered at a property in Brisbane’s north have likely been there for more than 10 years, police say.
The remains were discovered about 11am on Tuesday in a “plumbing pit” at the back of a property used by Autism Queensland on North Road at Brighton.
The disused pit was behind a detached Queenslander-style house at the back of the property which is being used as an administration building.
Acting Detective Superintendent Mick O’Dowd said initial investigations suggested the person was male, but they don’t know more than that at this stage.
Det Insp O’Dowd told reporters an investigation would occur at the crime scene this week “until a proper examination can be made of that water tank in the ground”.
“There are some suspicious aspects to the deceased at this stage, and we have to conduct further inquiries in relation to that, bearing in mind the time delay,” he said at the property.
Police couldn’t say exactly how long the remains had been there, but conceded it appeared to be more than 10 years.
Det Insp O’Dowd said they were calling on anyone with information about missing persons either recent or historical in the Brighton area to come forward.
“Any information they have they think might be relevant please contact Carseldine police or Crimestoppers and we’ll work through that information with them.”
EARLIER: FORENSIC investigators are examining a human skeleton found inside a septic tank at a special education facility on Brisbane’s northside this morning.
Detective acting Superintendent Mick O’Dowd said administrators were checking plumbing at 11am when they opened the tank at the rear of the property used by Autism Queensland at Brighton and found human remains.
Police believe the body, which had some clothing around it, was male, however, they could not yet determine how old the person had been.
“Initial inquiries indicated that the deceased person had been in the pit for quite a number of years but we don’t exactly how long until scientific examination takes place,” Det Supt O’Dowd said.
Police believe the remains are that of a male person, possibly there for 10 or so years.
