AN alleged drunk Lime scooter rider has narrowly avoided smashing into a table of diners in Brisbane.

The Caboolture man, 23, was scootering on the footpath in South Brisbane when he nearly struck the patrons who were enjoying an Australia Day meal around 10pm Saturday.

He then attempted to ride off on the motorised scooter before nearly falling as police called for him to stop, it will be alleged.

He was arrested and taken to Brisbane city watchhouse where he returned a BAC of 0.151 per cent – more than three times the legal limit, police allege.

Police will no longer issue cautions for reckless scooter riders

The man has been charged with not wearing a helmet and drink driving and is due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on February 19.

“Police would like to remind people who choose to ride electronic scooters that drink driving laws apply, as with cars and other vehicles,” a police spokesman said.

“Queensland road rules also state that all personal mobility device users must wear an approved helmet.”

Earlier this month a 43-year-old Lime scooter rider from Newstead allegedly ran a red light in the city before riding in the middle of the road.

When officers pulled him over his breath smelt of alcohol and he blew .174 — almost 3.5 times the legal limit, police allege.

Lime, which is currently running a large-scale electric scooter trial in Brisbane, said riders should never use a scooter after drinking alcohol.

“If you hop on a bike drunk, that counts as drinking and driving,” a Lime spokeswoman told The Courier-Mail this week.

“When you sign up to Lime, in our terms of service it states you should not be riding under the influence of alcohol.”
