Brisbane Bronco star Darius Boyd’s inheritance battle

LAWYERS for Brisbane Broncos captain Darius Boyd have reached an out-of-court settlement to pay a large chunk of money bequeathed to him by his grandma to his mother.

BRISBANE Broncos captain Darius Boyd has been given the green light by a Brisbane court to give his mum a slice of his inheritance.

In the District Court this morning, Judge Greg Koppenol sanctioned the payment of $100,000 to Boyd’s mother Rochelle Lyndal Fleur Boyd, 53, from Coombabah on the Gold Coast.

The money is part of $623,000 Boyd was bequeathed by his grandmother and “Number 1” fan, Delphine Merle Boyd, a widowed dressmaker, who died aged 87 on September 17 last year.

Judge Koppenol told the court that he was satisfied the proposed settlement was appropriate.

The $100,000 out-of-court settlement was agreed to on August 21 at a conference with Darius’ lawyers, and those for his mother.

Rochelle Boyd told the court she did not receive a cent under her mother’s will and has total assets of $52,209.

She receives a disability pension and lives in a share house, the court was told.

Rochelle was not close to Delphine Boyd, the court heard.

Darius Boyd was the sole beneficiary of the will and it includes $318,895 from an accommodation bond refund and $278,499 in a care annuity.

Delphine Boyd died at the Sandbrook Aged Care in Burleigh Waters.

Delphine’s son and Rochelle’s brother Dallyn Boyd died when Darius was eight. He was Darius’ “chief father figure”.

Rochelle Boyd suffers from an intellectual disability, depression with psychotic features, severe pathological gambling and poor impulse control, according to court documents.

Occupational therapist Regan Brown told the court that Rochelle was managing independently in her Gold Coast rental home with her housemate, and recommended that she be given an allowance of about $3000 a year for an annual holiday.
