Why Brisbane Broncos got their Payne Haas call just right

Haas was yesterday questioned by police over the incident – one of two which saw him fined $20,000 and suspended for the first four games of the season by the Broncos for failing to co-operate with an NRL Integrity Unit probe.

He was allegedly involved in a melee after the women’s rugby league grand final at Valleys rugby league club at the Grange in August last year, in which his girlfriend was playing.

Two groups of adult spectators clashed when children ran on to the ground after the final for a game of touch football.

Haas attended Hendra CIB yesterday with lawyer Campbell MacCallum to be interviewed by detectives.

Mr MacCallum said his client gave police a “full and frank” account of what happened and vehemently denied being involved in any assault.

“He instructs that his only involvement was to break up parties who were entering into some sort of melee,” he said.

“There was a complete and utter lack of involvement in any assault on his part. There have been no charges laid and we don’t expect there will be, but the matter is still being investigated.’’

Mr MacCallum said there was “no way” he would have allowed Haas to be formally interviewed by police if he did not believe his version had “an absolute ring of truth”.

“As a young rookie, he accepts any decision his club makes,” Mr MacCallum said, referring to the Broncos’ decision to suspend Haas.

“But he instructs me that he is training harder and harder to be as fit as he can when he gets back on the football field.’’

Police said a 42-year-old woman had been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and common assault over the incident.

A Broncos spokesman said Payne had given the club a full account of his involvement ‘and we were satisfied that there were no grounds to take the matter further with him’.

“Today, Payne was interviewed by police and he co-operated fully,” the spokesman said.

“We will await the finalisation of the police investigation and have no more comment at this time.”
