A VOCAL opponent of the VLAD laws and his son, a member of the infamous Yandina 5, have been sentenced to jail for serious drug offences.
Former Rebels sergeant-at-arms Michael Smith, 57, has been handed a sentence of almost eight years for drug trafficking while his son Steven Smith, 30, was given a 15-month jail sentence for supplying dangerous drugs.
The men pleaded guilty to the charges, which did not fall under the controversial Vicious Lawless Association Disestablishment Act because the offences occurred before it was legislated in October, 2013.
The court was told Michael Smith trafficked more than $166,000 worth of methylamphetamine between July 2012 and July 2013.
He asked his son to supply drugs to people on two occasions.
Brisbane Supreme Court Justice Debra Mullins ordered Steven Smith to be released on parole from today, taking into account the 80 days he spent behind bars after being arrested under VLAD over a pub gathering in November 2013.
His barrister, Tony Kimmins, had argued the laws were in a “state of flux” and that time served may not be acknowledged in the future.
Michael Smith will be eligible for parole on December 31, 2018.
