Brisbane City Council election results declared

The so-called Greenwave that threatened to swamp the LNP control of Brisbane City Council has officially been washed away.

Adrian Schrinner re-elected as Brisbane Lord Mayor

The “Greenwave” that the minor party had boasted would wash away the LNP’s control of Brisbane City Council has officially failed to materialise, with Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner still king of City Hall.

The formal declaration of the March 23 election on Thursday confirmed the LNP lost just one of its 19 wards at the election, and will still dominate the 26-member chamber.

Labor won five wards as the Greens doubled their count to two, with Independent Nicole Johnston retaining her Tennyson ward for a fourth term.

Mr Schrinner said Brisbane had faced a “critical turning point” at the election and residents had rightly chosen his experienced team.

“My team has the right mix of experience and energy to continue delivering the road, transport, and park upgrades that our suburbs need,” he posted on social media.

“Every member of my team is focused on the issues that matter to Brisbane residents; like safety in our suburbs, tackling congestion, helping deliver new homes and keeping costs down by balancing the budget.”

Mr Schrinner’s personal vote of 48 per cent was hardly changed from the last election in 2020, while Labor’s Tracey Price presided over a swing against her party of 4.6 per cent – which mostly went to the Greens’ high-profile mayoral candidate Jonathan Sriranganathan.

Three new councillors will be sworn in on Tuesday.

New Labor councillor Emily Kim saw out the LNP’s Angela Owen in Calamvale, while new Greens Paddington councillor Seal Chong Wah emerged victorious over Clare Jenkinson.

The LNP’s Alex Givney will represent the traditionally Labor-held Wynnum Manly, thanks to an unexpected swing against Sara Whitmee.

Mr Schrinner gave special thanks to his outgoing LNP councillors Jenkinson and Owen, attributing their losses to what he described as an “appalling” preference deal between Labor and the Greens.

“Both Clare and Angela clearly won on first preference votes, but the appalling preference swapping deal between Labor and the Greens allowed them to gain a narrow lead in the end,” he said.

“I also want to sincerely thank the wonderful Team Schrinner candidates, Allie Griffin (Morningside), Kylie Gates (Forest Lake), Peter Zhuang (Moorooka), Henry Swindon (Tennyson), Laura Wong (The Gabba) and Alex Givney (Wynnum Manly) who all put in an incredible effort.

“Next Tuesday, Alex Givney will be sworn in as the first non-Labor councillor for Wynnum Manly in more than 70 years.

“It’s a truly remarkable result and I look forward to working with Alex.”
