As next month’s Brisbane City Council elections loom, we explain how you can vote early today and reveal where your local booth is. SEE THE FULL LIST.

With Brisbane City council elections this weekend, we explain how you can vote early and reveal where your local booth is.

Electoral Commission Queensland deputy commissioner Wade Lewis reminded all eligible electors that voting in Queensland is compulsory.

“We have had a lot of people move to Queensland from other jurisdictions in the past four years, and in some other jurisdictions in Australia it is actually not compulsory to vote in local government elections.

“We’d much rather hand out a ballot than a fine, and we do look at the group of electors who fail to vote and we do take action afterwards.

“We’re planning for 45 per cent of constituents to vote early in these local government elections, a further 15 per cent by post, and the rest by phone or on the day.”

What is early voting?

Casting your ballot before election day is called early voting.

This option is available to everyone, but it is important to check dates and times that early voting centres are open.

What are the early voting eligibility requirements?

While there are early voting requirements for Federal Elections and Federal Referendums, there are no eligibility criteria for early voting in Queensland State Elections or Queensland Local Government Elections. But if you do choose to vote early next month, still remember to bring your maroon voter information card with you for quicker voting.
