The Palaszczuk Government has announced it will deliver a major new plan to tackle climate change in Queensland. But there were a few details missing.

The Time Is Now: The future of climate change

The Palaszczuk Government has announced it will deliver a major new plan to tackle climate change in Queensland but it’s not known when it will be completed.

Environment Minister Leeanne Enoch on Tuesday revealed during an online environment debate that a re-elected Palaszczuk Government would deliver a Climate Action Plan 2020-2030.

But the plan is yet to be drafted and it’s not known when it will be completed.

Ms Enoch, who joined the LNP’s environment spokesman David Crisafulli and Greens MP Michael Berkman as panellists for Queensland Conservation Council’s debate, told listeners

the plan would include actions to reduce emissions and sustainability initiatives.

Asked for more information on the plan, Ms Enoch told The Courier-Mail the plan would guide the “next stage of our work to meet our climate targets and support thousands of jobs”.

“We are already taking strong action on climate change,” she said.

“Our government established the Land Restoration Fund, reinstated responsible tree clearing laws and set emissions reduction and renewable energy targets.

“We are also investing $500 million in a Renewable Energy Fund and we’re on our way to achieving our renewable energy target of 50 per cent renewables by 2030.

“Investment in renewables is an important part of our plan for economic recovery.”

Ms Enoch would not say how the new plan would be different to the Pathways to a climate resilient Queensland 2017-2030.

The new plan will be drafted in consultation with stakeholders.

Ms Enoch also revealed during the debate that a re-elected Palaszczuk Government would

look at establishing an independent environmental protection agency which other states have.

She said the agency could strengthen the already-strong environmental protections in place in Queensland.
