AN EXTRA 100 speed awareness monitors would be rolled out around Brisbane schools under a $12.6 million plan from Adrian Schrinner to bolster pedestrian safety.

The Lord Mayor also today announced measures to boost safety around retirement villages and areas with a higher proportion of elderly residents.

Cr Schrinner said the new “Slow For SAM” signs would be permanent fixtures at the schools, and would be in addition to the 179 rotating signs that are currently rolled out across the city.

“Safety around schools is a priority and Team Schrinner will commit to an investment in effective and friendly reminders so motorists slow down around schools,” Cr Schrinner said.

“We are acting on community feedback at individual school locations where specific issues have been raised, and are investigating options to increase student safety, in consultation with schools and community groups.

“Every dollar invested in keeping our children safe around our schools was money well spent.”

The schools that will receive the signs will be announced during the next term of council.

About $1.6 million would also be spent next year under a re-elected LNP administration on new and widened footpaths as well as extra safety measures to help elderly residents.

“The first priority location for this program is Taigum where we will aim to install missing links, widen footpaths and make the journey safer for our older citizens and encourage them to remain active and healthy by walking to local places,” Cr Schrinner said.

The Lord Mayor also committed an additional $6.4 million towards the council’s ‘Safer Paths to School’ program in a bid to improve the footpaths near schools.

The program will also now include pedestrian safety improvements.
