Qld woman blows seven times the limit

A Gold Coast woman has been allegedly caught driving over seven times the legal blood-alcohol limit – one of the highest readings recorded in Queensland.

Police allege the 36-year-old woman got behind the wheel of a Nissan X-Trail and drove from her house at Coomera to a shopping complex on Hope Island about 7pm last Wednesday.

Members of the public phoned police after she allegedly crashed into two cars in a car park off Masthead Way.

The woman allegedly recorded a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.379 per cent when breathalysed by officers.

Body-worn-camera footage showed the moment officers breathalyse the woman.

In the footage, the woman can be seen using big hand gestures as she claims to police that her car had been stolen and she had only had two drinks that night.

“Now someone took my car,” she tells officers.

“I don’t know why, in the last couple of days I, I just haven’t reported. Someone took my car.”

When asked how many drinks she had consumed, she tells the officers: “Yeah I had two beers”

A Queensland police spokeswoman said the reading was one of the highest recorded in Queensland.

Acting Chief Superintendent Ray Rohweder was gobsmacked by the high reading.

“It’s just shocking, that’s all I can say,” Supt Rohweder.

“At that level she should almost be dead.

“Anything above a reading of. 30 per cent is starting to get into the level of coma and death.”

Supt Rohweder said while there had been some cases in Queensland of drivers recording blood-alcohol concentrations over 0.40 per cent, many of the highest readings were only discovered during autopsies.

In 2015, another Gold Coast woman recorded 0.48 per cent – nearly 10 times the legal limit.

At the time the massive reading was believed to be a national record.

The 36-year-old Coomera woman was charged with high-range drink-driving.

Her licence was immediately suspended and she will face Southport Magistrates Court on April 4.
