Commuters are facing delays of more than an hour after a truck jackknifed, causing five other cars to crash on the M1 at Shailer Park.

Queensland Ambulance took two women in their 30s to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in stable conditions following the crash on Wednesday afternoon.

Heavy haulage has now arrived to remove the vehicles from the crash scene, near exit 28, and police are in the process of reopening two southbound lanes.

As of 4pm, hour-long delays were still being reported and motorists were asked to avoid the area if possible.

It is unclear what caused the truck to jackknife.
