As a rainband sweeps across the region, South East Queensland residents are being warned to prepare for a week of colder temperatures and dangerous coastal swells.

El Nino on the horizon: Preparing for potential year-long impact on weather

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that South East Queensland residents should brace themselves for a cold snap starting Saturday night, as a rainband makes its way eastwards from Victoria to the Fraser Coast.

While only 4mm of rain is anticipated to quench the region, the real impact will be felt in the form of chillier temperatures, according to Bureau of Meteorology’s Danny Johnson.

The weather system is expected to introduce a cold snap, with colder nights and brisk mornings throughout the coming week.

“Behind that system, we’ll see a cool dry air mass in southeast Queensland,” he said.

He added that residents can expect “cool sunny days, with the overnight temperatures probably dropping down to 12 (Tuesda) or 13 (Monday and Thursday) degrees over the next week.”

However, the cooler nights won’t be enough to bring down daytime temperatures significantly. The bureau has predicted that temperatures will hover around 25 to 27 degrees during the day. “We’ve got a bit of a cool change, dry temperatures around the 25 to 27 mark next week around Southeast Queensland,” he said.

A hazardous surf warning has been also been issued from 4.30am to midnight Saturday for the Fraser Coast, Sunshine Coast Waters, and Gold Coast waters with surf and swell conditions expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming.
