A SMALL group of protesters are wrapping up their protest after storming the Courier Mail’s car park this morning.
The protesters, armed with banners and a megaphone, chanted slogans and called for more people to be concerned about climate change.
The group is associated with the Extinction Rebellion movement, aimed at raising awareness about climate change.
“We are facing societal collapse by 2050 as a result of the climate crisis.”
“We will continue to immobilise the city until all of our demands are met,” said a protester through the megaphone.
The group has threatened to shut down Brisbane city on August 6, dubbing it “rebellion day.”
“We’re here sharing facts about the climate crisis,” one woman speaking on the livestream said.
“There are people already dying from the effects of the climate emergency.”
Another woman said she was protesting because the Australian government officials were “dinosaurs”.
“I’m here because our government won’t do anything.”
“Our government are like dinosaurs, 97 per cent of scientists say it’s happening.”
She said it would be different if they were talking about heart surgery.
“If it’s a climate person our country and people here do not want to believe,” she said.
“Scientists who spend their whole lives studying the weather are telling us.”
A man claiming to be an environmental scientist added: “When we read about climate change in most of the mainstream media, it is completely trivialised when in fact it’s an extinction-level event.
“It’s imperative the mainstream media, the main voice to communicating to the public, tells the truth that climate change is an extinction-level event not just for the human race but for most species on this planet.”
More than 10 police are supervising the protest.
