Shop BNE city is expected to draw thousands of fashionistas, foodies and beauty lovers to the city centre from Friday for the sale set to provide a much-needed spending boost for the retail sector.

James White from Robert White Jewellers in Brisbane Arcade said the annual promotion had been a success in previous years with an obvious increase in customers.

Keen shoppers Maddy O’Reilly and Ally West at Queens Plaza gear up for Shop BNE.

He said the bonanza was needed more than ever since Covid-19 reached Australia.

“Probably the biggest impact we saw during the pandemic was the loss of foot traffic as people worked from home,” James White said.

“So we’re hoping this will increase the amount of people coming in because they know they can get a good deal at a particular store and then hopefully they’ll see what the rest of the arcade has to offer.

Queens Plaza centre manager Pamela Wakeford said the home of international luxury fashion would be providing some special offers as part of the initiative.

“At Queens Plaza, we’ve been busy over the past year, welcoming more of the world’s best brands including Balenciaga and GUCCI,” Ms Wakeford said.

“We’re thrilled to see our community and CBD workers return to discover some of the great offers they can take advantage of this Spring.”

 Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said a shift to shopping online during the pandemic had compounded a downturn in foot traffic and sales for city retailers.

“This is the perfect opportunity for lovers of all things fashion to get in some pre-Christmas shopping, and at the same time support small business and retailers as they try to recover from the impacts of Covid-19 on shopping trade,” Cr Schrinner said.

“Even though this has been a particularly tough couple of years for everyone, it has been even tougher on our city retailers as many companies still have a significant percentage of their workforce opting to work from home and not spending in city shops.

Shop BNE City is a Brisbane City Council initiative delivered by Brisbane Economic Development Agency with a remit to support city retailers and businesses recover from the impacts of the pandemic.

Myer, David Jones, Mimco and Laser Clinics are among participating venues.
