CHRIS and Liam Hemsworth have taken to their surfboards as part of an emotional ashes spreading ceremony for a legendary Gold Coast lifesaver.
The Hemsworth brothers took part in a mass memorial paddle-out for former Currumbin Vikings Surf Club president John Munro at Currumbin Beach on Saturday.
Mr Munro, who died of brain cancer in 2018 despite the efforts of renowned brain surgeon Charlie Teo to save him, is the father of former Currumbin pro-surfer Luke Munro, with whom the Hemsworths are good mates.
A surf boat named in Mr Munro’s honour was christened and used to row out his ashes.
About 500 people, including the Hemsworths, former surf star Bede Durbidge and Olympian Brooke Hanson, took part in the paddle-out.
Luke, his siblings Adam, Kurt and Samantha and their mother Debbie were part of the moving ceremony.
“It was a farewell befitting the king of the beach,” Currumbin Vikings spokesman Ian Hanson said.
“Johnny was a man who risked his life for others because he wanted to protect his precious piece of paradise perched in the shadows of Elephant Rock, and who went on to lead his clubs as its president for a decade of dominance.”
