THE Western Downs SES Unit's controller Sharn Pogan has been awarded Member of the Year at the South West Region SES Week Awards in Toowoomba last week.

She was recognised for her dedication and hard work with council, emergency services, and other SES groups, enhancing safety in the community and for SES volunteers.

"That's why I joined, to help others and make a difference,” Mrs Pogan said.

Mrs Pogan has been an active member of the SES for more than six years, and has been involved in many SES operations.

At first she had no idea she'd been nominated for the award.

"I actually received a letter to say there is a SES Week Awards, please attend,” she said.

"And by the ceremony on Saturday I was aware that there was something a little bigger than normal going on.

"It was certainly an honour and a privilege, but again its not an individual award, it might have my name on it but it's about everyone, it's about the community, it's about my support network both in Toowoomba - our head office, the Western Downs Regional Council, and our other SES groups, so it's not really a one man show.”
