Wieambilla shooting: Constable Randall Kirk and partner thank community for support

The police officer wounded in a horror shooting ambush that claimed the lives of two colleagues has spoken out after undergoing surgery to remove shrapnel.

Queensland Police Union President Ian Leavers speaks about Wieambilla shooting.

Constable Randall Kirk and his wife Breanna have thanked the community for their support as he is set to leave hospital after being treated for injuries suffered in an ambush at Wieambilla on Monday.

Constable Kirk was one of four police officers to enter the Wains Road property to ask about the location of Nathaniel Train, who was reported missing from NSW.

In one of the most shocking crimes in Queensland’s history, the four officers were ambushed by brothers Nathaniel and Gareth Train and Gareth’s wife Stacey, who were armed with a variety of rifles and had fortified their home.

Sadly Constable Rachel McCrow and Constable Matthew Arnold were killed at the hands of the trio while Constable Kirk and a fourth officer, Constable Keely Brough were barely able to escape with their lives.

Constable Kirk suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital where doctors were able to remove shrapnel and treat his injuries.

In a statement released by the Queensland Police Union of Employees, Constable Kirk and his wife said they had been overwhelmed by the support they have received from the public.

“I’m feeling fine, just a little sore,” the statement said.

“My main thoughts are with the other police families at this awful time.

“It means a lot to know the community cares for us all.

“My wife and I have a young family and would appreciate privacy as we come to terms with this.”

The Kirk’s are expecting another baby next month and the family are thankful they will be together for this important moment.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was on the thousands of people who have sent messages of support the families of the fallen officer and the survivors.

“Every officer knows the risk that they face in the life of duty,” he said.

“They are all too aware of the dangers that they face.

“Yet they do their job. They do it for our communities.

“That is courage, and it is public service at the highest level.

“Today and every day I pay tribute to each and every one of the police officers who serve their local communities and who serve their nation.

“This is not a price that anyone who puts on the uniform should ever pay.”

The Queensland Police Union of Employees has established a Remembrance Fund to assist the officers’ families in this difficult time.
