NEW guidelines to help communities have their say on the solar farm industry were introduced last week.

The Queensland Solar Farm Guidelines were developed in response to calls from both industry and regional communities for a clear guide for interaction and development after the renewable energy boom.

Natural Resources, Mines and Energy Minister Anthony Lynham described the guidelines as "a clear checklist for local governments about what's needed for sustainable, community and industry led large-scale solar development”.

"Just say you have a farmer, he's concerned about a solar farm proposal near him, well these guidelines will enable him to look at how he can get information, make specific objections and get more guidance on things like how close the farm is to the land, is there any buffering zone, flood mitigation, or cross-contamination from run-off or seeds and it also sets expectations on how the solar farm company should interact with the farmer,” Dr Lynham said.

The guidelines also outline the approval process, technical and environmental considerations, and other information for stakeholders including the community, council, and traditional owners.

"In simple format, it shows and tells everyone, it gives them the guidance of how to progress forward in a way that is balanced,” Dr Lynham said.

Western Downs mayor Paul McVeigh said the council had led the way in rigorous assessment of development applications.

"We strongly encourage applicants to talk to the neighbours about their proposed development and in some cases, for large scale developments to the broader community.”
