A routine call-out to a disturbance quickly turned ugly for Chinchilla police after officers were surrounded by a group of aggressive offenders who smashed up a cop car.

A Chinchilla police spokesman said officers had been called the a disturbance at “The Murder Flats” at 13 Mayne Street about 9pm on Tuesday, July 13.

The Chinchilla unit complex has been referred to as “The Murder Flats” by locals since the 1993 murder of Leslie Tennyson, who was found dead inside his bedroom.

The murder investigation went unsolved for a decade until a 39-year-old New South Wales man Richard Webb pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 2004.

The spokesman said a man stumbled down Mayne Street from a pub got into an argument with people outside the flats.

When officers arrived to keep the peace, the offenders turned on the officers, surrounding them and damaging a vehicle.

The spokesman said police were forced to use capsicum spray, and one offender threw a brick through a police car window.

“Investigation into the matter are continuing, and charges are pending,” he said.
