CURRENT Western Downs Regional Council deputy mayor George Moore has announced he will be running for the top job at the upcoming Local Government elections on March 16.
Councillor Moore said it had been a privilege to represent the WDRC over the last four years as deputy mayor, working for the community with a dedicated and committed team of fellow councillors, supported by very capable and loyal staff.
While he admitted there was still a lot of work to do, he said he was up for the challenge.
“I’m proud of the many outcomes council has been able to achieve since amalgamation, in particular the areas of water and sewerage and waste infrastructure upgrades, improvements to the road networks and providing better facilities for our communities,” he said.
“Council is in a strong financial position with capacity for significant debt reduction in the coming term.
“One of the important jobs in the next term will be assisting communities to recover from the period of rapid growth and highlighting the strong civic pride our towns have always had.”
It has been Cr Moore’s goal to ensure every community has an equal voice, and promised that would continue, if elected.
He said the past four years as deputy mayor had allowed him to develop close relationships with current and opposing members of State and Federal government, senior department officers, and residents of all Western Downs communities.
“I strongly value communication with our community and will always be available to listen. If you have a good idea, let’s make it happen,” he said.
The ability to make good decisions, passion, commitment, integrity and honesty are traits Cr Moore believes are essential for local government and ones he holds dear.
He said he will offer experience, leadership, effective corporate governance and true community representation.
“The future of our communities is important,” Cr Moore said.
“With a farming heritage, local government experience, common sense attitude, integrity and strong moral values, and with council and communities working together, I am committed to getting it right.”
