The pregnant wife of one of the officers injured in the horrific police massacre on the Darling Downs on Monday has expressed her shock at the incident.
Chinchilla-based Constable Randall Kirk was one of two officers who managed to escape the execution-style ambush at a property at Wieambilla, south of Chinchilla just after 4.30pm.
Their colleagues, 29-year-old Constable Rachel McCrow and 26-year-old Constable Matthew Arnold, were murdered along with neighbour Alan Dare at the scene.
Three suspects, Gareth Train, his brother Nathaniel, a former Queensland school principal, and Gareth’s wife Stacey Train, were killed in a police firefight later that night.
Constable Kirk suffered a gunshot wound to the leg while his colleague Constable Keely Brough, who had only been in the force for nine weeks, fled into bushland, pursued by the gunmen.
Speaking to Warwick Stanthorpe Today, Const. Kirk’s wife Breanna said her husband was doing well in hospital.
“Randall is having minor surgery in Toowoomba this morning and is doing well,” she said.
“When I first spoke to Randall at the Chinchilla Hospital last night, his first thoughts were for his colleagues.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of Randall’s deceased colleagues.”
Former Stanthorpe local Mrs Kirk, who is pregnant with the couple’s second child, said they had been overwhelmed with support following the incident.
“Randall and I are very grateful for the overwhelming support from the Chinchilla and Stanthorpe communities,” she said.
“The police family has opened its arms and embraced us.
“We have spoken to the Police Minister Mark Ryan this morning, and he has offered wonderful encouragement and support.”
