What started off like any other day soon turned awry after a Western Downs man heard a window smash when he was getting ready for work.

Looking through his front door, the witness spotted the shadowy figure of a Miles teenager lurking on the street in front of his house underneath the street lights, and promptly called police and followed the offender as he fled the scene.

Police finally managed to track down the then 18-year-old offender and uncovered he was responsible for five offences between April and May 2022 after trying to derail the investigation, the court heard.

Blade Isaac Smith, 19, pleaded guilty in Chinchilla Magistrates Court to destroying a glass window pane, obstructing a police officer while executing their duty, two counts of unlawfully supplying a dangerous drug to another person and possessing a restricted firearm.

Police prosecutor Chris Hutchins said an off duty police officer was the first to arrive on scene where he discovered Smith crouching near a bush behind a wheelie bin.

However, a juvenile stepped forward taking blame for the destruction charge but it was revealed during the police interview that Smith bribed the juvenile into confessing in exchange for cannabis.

Further, police found a restricted firearm on Smith - a replica hand pistol gel blaster, which he then pleaded with police to give back to him.

Lawyer Brad Skuse said his client had already suffered after he lost his two jobs when “word got around the small town about his charges”.

“He wants to relocate to the Gold Coast with his girlfriend and wants to go to Tafe to get a trade,” Mr Skuse said.

Magistrate Turra said it seemed the charges were a result of the defendant’s young age and immaturity.

“These are quite serious charges - a really, really poor decision. It was never going to turn out well for you, the police are smarter than that,” Mr Turra said.

“You break the window, you pay for it, but the rest is really just foolishness.

“I don’t think you intended to cause as much trouble as you did.”

Magistrate Turra ordered Smith to pay $1975 in restitution and said he would give Smith a chance to move on with his life and would therefore not record his conviction.
