A well-known defence lawyer is in hospital after he was assaulted on the steps of a country courthouse, within full view of the local police station.

Chinchilla police have taken a suspect into custody after an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service lawyer was bashed outside the courthouse.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the male lawyer was assaulted about 10am on Wednesday, within view of the local police station.

“He is still at the hospital being assessed for bruising,” he said.

“He was conscious and breathing.”

Police were able to intervene and arrest a suspect immediately.

They are expected to charge the suspect with assault occasioning bodily harm later today.
