CRICKET: A Charleville versus Saints showdown delivered a few spin bowls in St George on Saturday.
The famously competitive St George side proved a challenge for the Charleville XI, which roped in players from Tambo and Quilpie, to make up the numbers.
Charleville player Alex Turnbull said their competitors were skilled bowlers in the first innings.
"To be honest, St George gave us a fair hiding and most of us struggled to get over 10 runs,” Turnbull said.
"Charleville batted first and Morgan Collins did really well, scoring 30 runs. Some of the extras managed to hit 10 and we got 98 runs.
"At the change of innings we went down to a barbecue at the pub before we finished the game; it was quite relaxing actually,” he said.
Hitting the pitch again after lunch, St George did not take long to surge past their opponents, making the runs in only 19 overs.
Team manager Christie Clayton said the Saints showed off the best of their town's squad.
"St George were a great team of blokes to play against and they definitely put up a good competition.
"We sort of struggled with our runs but they played really well,” she said.
One injury on the day had Brett 'Rocky' Smith leave the pitch with a broken nose from a wayward ball from the top edge of the bat.
Smith took the injury in his stride, and stayed in St George overnight.
