The next generation of Queensland rugby league stars were on show in Toowoomba at the weekend.
John McDonald Sports Complex played host to the Walker Weekend Challenge with under-13 boys and girls from across south east and west Queensland in action.
Here’s our look at all the action and comment from coaches taking the reins of new teams over the weekend.
Roma and Districts
Drawing in players from towns more than 90km away from the ‘central hub’ of Roma creates difficult and somewhat unique challenges for this team.
Despite those challenges though Roma and District (boys) were a competitive unit all weekend.
“This weekend was our first games together as a team,” coach Scott Hilton said.
“We really held our own against bigger teams and improved individually and as a team with every game we played.”
Pittsworth
“We have tried to not be too critical or ask too much of the boys from a football focus,” coach Matt Briggs said.
“The big thing we’ve challenged them on this weekend is attitude and effort though and I’m proud to say they’ve really stood up there.
“They’ve played some good footy but importantly they’re playing with the right attitude.”
Valleys Black
“We really wanted them to come together as a team and they did that,” coach Neil McLachlan said.
“There was no doubting their effort all weekend.
“They worked hard individually and for each – we wanted to see effort and engagement in everything they did and that is what we got.”
South Burnett
“It’s challenge bringing the boys together and getting them to gel for the weekend because normally they’re at different clubs playing against each other,” coach Nathan Prain said.
“But I thought they gelled really.
“We saw all the footy skills, good line speed, tackling and footwork but the team morale was great as well.
“We’re really proud of their efforts.”
