SOLDIERS in Afghanistan have uncovered a major weapons funding drug factory during a mission to the northern Helmand province.
Five tonnes of morphine base and 4500 litres of morphine solution worth about $9 million was seized and destroyed by members of the Afghan National Security Force, Australian Special Operations Task Group and US Drug Enforcement Administration.
ASOTG Commanding Lieutenant Colonel J said the discovery would severely disrupt two insurgent narcotic networks and impact on the insurgents' ability to "fund their fighting campaign".
He said the Afghan-led operations were critical to future stability in the region.
