Queensland soldiers to train anti-ISIS fighters in Iraq

THE bulk of the 300 Australian troops being dispatched to the Middle East to help train Iraqi soldiers will come from Queensland.

The Brisbane-based 7th Brigade is a multi-role combat brigade of the Australian Army.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced the Australian Defence Force would send the soldiers into Iraqi to help train fighters to better face ISIS militants.

It confirmed this morning confirmed the fighters will be pulled from Brisbane's 7th Brigade.

These forces will form Task Force Taji -- a training contingent with soldiers skilled in command, "force protection" and support, and include infantry, cavalry, logistic, communication and medical personnel.

On Tuesday, Mr Abbott said: 

"Ultimately, it is Iraq that must defeat the death cult but we do not want to leave the Iraqis on their own."

The troops will bolster the 170 Australian troops already in Iraq, although they are due to return in September.

The "Building Partner Capacity" mission is supported by forces from the United States, Spain, New Zealand, Italy, United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands.

Brisbane's 7th Brigade has a long history in foreign conflicts. 

It was first put together in 1915 and its forces fought at Gallipoli and on the Western Front during World War One.

In World War Two, the brigade fought in New Guinea and on Bougainville against encroaching Japanese forces.
