WORLD No.1 Rafael Nadal has his sights set on the Grand Slam record of 17 held by Roger Federer after beating arch-rival Novak Djokovic 3-6 7-5 6-2 6-4 to win his ninth French Open title, and fifth in succession.

The triumph, which erased some of the disappointment from this year's Australian Open, saw the Spaniard join Pete Sampras in second place on the all-time list with 14.

"For me, this is amazing, an emotional day," Nadal said.

"I lost the final of the Australian Open this year, when I had a problem with my back. It was a very hard moment, so today gave me back what happened in Australia."

The victory took Nadal's record at Roland Garros to 66-1 in 10 appearances, his only loss coming against Robin Soderling in 2009.

The 28-year-old also moved to within one win of the record of 46 clay court singles titles held by Argentina's Guillermo Vilas.
