MAJOR reforms to Australia's aged care system took a step forward on Wednesday, with five bills introduced in federal parliament.

The bills will make numerous changes to the Aged Care Act 1997 including new consumer directed care packages to give people more control over their own care.

Other new initiatives, budgeted in may last year, included a $880 million home care package, an extra 30,000 residential aged care places and boost to dementia care.

The reforms also allocated $1.2 billion to help improve wages and conditions for aged care workers.

While the reforms are yet to pass, it is understood there is enough support to ensure the bills clear passage through parliament.
