A $14 million project will seal and widen more than 25km of gravel road across the region.

Two part of Fitzroy Developmental Road between Taroom and Duaringa are being sealed in a project brought forward as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan.

Assistant Regional Roads Minister Bruce Saunders said the road between Taroom and Duaringa was 217km with about 125km of gravel, so the extra works would be a massive improvement.

Works began in June on a $6 million project to seal 10.5km of Fitzroy Developmental Road between Duaringa and Bauhinia.

A further $8m project will start in August to seal about 15 kilometres of road between Bauhinia and Taroom.

Works will include drainage improvements, realignment, cement stabilisation, line marking and new signs, with work expected to be completed by mid-2022.

Mr Saunders said the projects were funded in a $400 million roads stimulus package announced by the Palaszczuk Government during the height of the pandemic in 2020.

“That package was put together to pump extra funding into road projects across regional Queensland, and support jobs for council road crews and local contractors,” Mr Saunders said.

“We know sealing and widening roads makes a huge difference for the local communities that drive them every day, as well for businesses moving freight through the interior of our state.”

He said every effort would be made during the works to minimise interruptions to motorists, but motorists are reminded to drive carefully through the roadworks and be aware of changed traffic conditions.
