An Emerald caravan park could soon undergo an expansion if a development application gets the green light from council.

A material change of use application was recently lodged with Central Highlands Regional Council for an expansion to the Emerald Tourist Park on Roberts St.

According to the planning report, the development would happen over seven stages.

In its current form, the Emerald Tourist Park has a number of caravan and camping sites and cabins.

It also has ‘The Yabby Trap’ where fish and chips are available from the end of May for the winter season.

Included in the plans are 40 camping/caravan sites, 15 one bedroom cabins, 10 two bedroom cabins, six poolside two bedroom cabins, 32 rooms of motel style accommodation and an onsite restaurant/bar.

The report says stage one of the project would include 40 caravan and camping sites as well as the pool and amenities block, with cabins to follow on stages two and three.

Stages four and five would see the motel style rooms with more cabins in stage six and the bar and restaurant in stage seven.

The design for the bar and restaurant is yet to be finalised.

The proposal document says the expansion will also benefit the local economy through providing “high quality” short-term tourist accommodation during large local events such as Ag-Grow and Western 7’s.

The expansion would also provide the opportunity to keep tourists in the region longer which would result in them spending money locally within the Central Highlands region.

According to the report the operational hours of the park would be between 7am and 5pm with a staff member to be on call for emergencies and late check-ins.

Staff would also be responsible for cleaning, maintenance and upkeep of the cabins and caravan sites.
