CQU hosts STEM workshops for young students across the region

Central Queensland University hosted the hands-on workshops for young people across the region.

Students from throughout the Emerald region were able to ignite their passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics at Young Engineers workshops at CQUniversity’s Emerald Campus.

Young Engineers provides practical application of STEM through hands-on workshops where scientific and coding concepts are demonstrated using LEGO prototypes.

Director and lead instructor Pavle Jeric said it was the first time workshops had been held in Emerald.

“Three workshops were run for three different age groups,” he said.

“Participants in Years 1 and 2 built, motorised and programmed a conveyor belt, while students in Years 3 to 5 built and programmed an electronic parking gate using a motion sensor.

“Participants in Years 6 and above built and programmed a cake mixer.”

CQUniversity Associate Vice President Rockhampton and Central Highlands Regions Kim Harrington said programs such as Young Engineers were an exciting opportunity for young people in the Central Highlands.

“CQUniversity Emerald Campus was pleased to host the participants and we hope they enjoyed the learning experience,” she said.
