Indigenous elder Tom Calma named Senior Australian of the Year 2023

Australia Day Award winners for the Central Highland Regional Council areas were announced for 2023, with the winners celebrated at four presentation ceremonies in the area.

The areas were divided into Emerald/Gemfields, Blackwater/Duaringa, Springsure/Rolleston, and Capella/Tieri.

Central Highlands Mayor Kerry Hayes said it was an honour to host events that recognised the high-achievers of the community.

“Congratulations to our region’s Australia Day Award winners and nominees for 2023,” Mr Hayes said.

“All winners and nominees tirelessly work to make our community the best it can be.

“It was great to see so many nominees this year – a true testament to community spirit.

“Your selfless actions show community spirit in identifying and celebrating the commitment of others.”

Junior sportspersons of the year were Maggie McDougall, Madison Hand, Jackson Schuh, and Mackenzie Lines.

The senior sportsperson/administrator awards went to Kathryn Deighton, Blake Wells, and Belynda Perkins.

The cultural award winners were Dylan Currie, Carlin Dyer, Springsure State School Music Student Group, and Marybeth Harvey.

Young citizen of the year was taken out by Amber Paulson, Chelsea Kucks, and Maccalyn Langtry.

Citizen of the year winners were Tania Paulson, Kelli Willmot, Isabelle Watson, and joint winners Belynda Perkins and Kim Thompson in Capella/Tieri.

Community event of the year recipients were Emerald Show Society – Taste Central Highlands Field to Fine Dining Event, Blackwater NAIDOC planning Committee members Jamie Row Row, Beth Dyer, Springsure Working Horse Association – ACA Golden Anniversary National Finals 2022 and the Central Highlands Showgirl and Rural Ambassador Finals 2022.
