A kangaroo hunter in the Central Highlands hopes to supply product to a game meat processing plant with plans for a new facility.

A planning report was submitted to the Central Highlands Regional Council by Murray and Associates Surveyors and Town Planners in April on behalf of the man.

The Development Application is for a Development Permit for a Material Change of Use to establish a low impact industry, warehouse at Rolleston.

The warehouse would be used as a cold storage facility for legally harvested kangaroos by the man, who is licensed by the Queensland Government and Safefood Queensland to hunt the animals.

The proposed site is a 2023 sqm block of land at Rolleston.

It would be solely used by the man, who presently lives in a detached house on the site and is in the process of buying it.

It is considered to be a home business.

The operational hours would be between 4am and 6am because the animals are hunted at night and once dead, need to be placed into cold storage as soon as possible.

As it is, the hunter has to travel from the shooting spots to the closest freezer.

The business’ profitability depends on the successful application of the project.

The man estimates he would hunt about three times a week and the meat would be taken to a game meat processing plant once a week by refrigerated road freight.

A 2.4m x 12m chiller container would be placed near the southwest border of the property on a-frames and is not considered a permanent structure.

The chiller itself would need to be connected to electricity.

Murray and Associates Surveyors and Town Planners said in the report the development would contribute to the economic activity established within the township.

“The proposed development is essentially a home based business, which will result in very low activity hours,” they said.

“The nature of operation and appearance of the container will not have any detrimental impact on the existing amenity of the township of Rolleston.”

In the conclusions and recommendations part of the report Murray and Associates Surveyors and Town Planners explained why a kangaroo meat cold storage facility should go on that block of land.

“The proposed development is not inconsistent with the township zone and surrounding activities established within the town of Rolleston,” they said.

“The nature of operation of the use will have no impact on adjoining or surrounding occupants of properties.

“The proposed development will not adversely impact on any areas of environmental significance and has no environmental constraints or hazards.”

The application is yet to be approved by Central Highlands Regional Council.
