WHEN Linda Baker's husband Boyd visited the Solomon Islands on his most recent mission trip he eyed a problem in dire need of fixing.

Many of his and his wife's new friends had vision impairments and were sharing just one monocle between them to get by with their reading and work.

Having hosted the Islander friends back home in Gayndah, their struggle struck a chord with Mrs Baker.

Celebrating her 70th birthday this month, she asked that guests make donations towards mission projects in the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, in lieu of any gifts.

"When you hear about the needs that our friends have over there, I have no needs," Mrs Baker said.

"We're rich, I don't need anything."

Her birthday guests contributed $1000 for mission projects, and Mrs Baker said she didn't miss out one bit.

"I felt loved and treasured and honoured," she said.

More than 60 guests travelled from as far as the Gold Coast, Toowoomba and Brisbane to share in the laughter and reflection.

A rolling slideshow captured highlights from 70 wonderful years, as guests were regaled by Mr Baker's memories of their first meeting, along with speeches and poetic tributes from their three children.

"Throughout every stage of her life, the one thing that stands out is her positive and cheerful nature," daughter Pauline Hills said.

"This has never been more apparent than in recent years with her cancer diagnosis and subsequent surgery.

"Others may choose to wallow in self pity and 'why me?' Mum has just simply taken it in her stride with a peace and joy that would be unfathomable to some."
