81-YEAR-OLD Joe Avis said his favourite thing about his wife, Lyle, was she is always there when he needs her.
On Valentine's Day the Monto couple celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Working together and respect are the key ingredients to a long marriage, the couple agreed.
"And knowing when to give up on a disagreement," Mr Avis said.
The couple met through a family member in 1956 and married on February 14, 1959.
Mr Avis spent his first 75 years at the Mulgildie Avis Farm while Mrs Avis grew up at Cania, before joining her husband at the farm in 1962.
They have six children, 19 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
The hardest adversity the couple ever faced together, is one all too familiar to today's farmers.
"The drought in 1969," Mr Avis said.
"Trying to dairy and feed cows with no hay available. All we could get was peanut hay."
Although faced with their own struggles they always found time to volunteer.
From Meals on Wheels to campdrafts to holding presidential titles in several organisations, Mr and Mrs Avis have kept busy in the Monto and Mulgildie community.
But their favourite memories together weren't made until 2002, when they retired from dairying and began doing trips in their caravan.
In 2013 they moved off the farm and into town in Mulgildie.
Bill and Beryl Avis took over the family farm.
"In 2023 the Avis family farm in Mulgildie will celebrate 100 years of Avis ownership, which is a huge milestone in itself," daughter Rebecca Duncan said.
Last weekend the couple were joined by all six children at the farm to toast their Diamond anniversary.
And they were surprised with new number plates.
